My Modest, Potent Vinyl Collection

The quick version:

Between the mid-70s and mid-90s (I was born in the very-early 70s) I acquired a record collection of modest size—about 1,000 to 1,200 12 inch records. My older brothers also had collections and a love of the whole post-war popular music thing was a common passion between us. We, to a large degree, shared our collections.

My closest friends were also simultaneously acquiring LPs (and other assorted 12, 10, and 7 inches), by the ton, and records were constantly being swapped to and fro.

A number of things occurred in the 90s that found me, piecemeal over time, selling off pretty much all of my vinyl. I loved my records, but I didn’t need them. Nearly every facet of my personal and professional lives revolved around music, musicians, and the music industry. I didn’t feel deprived of the stuff.

Vaganza, between late-‘96 and late-‘97, found ourselves in a bit of a financial dead-space, as Geffen negotiated with Elektra to purchase our album (our advances from the latter already spent, mostly on the recording of our debut LP), and we awaited a sizable publishing advance from EMI. David, my Vaganza-mate, returned to work (as a guitar and piano teacher), as a sensible and responsible human being would do, and I instead chose to sell off my records for booze and related expenses, while incurring substantial debt (I conducted my affairs quite differently than I do today).

I lived just around the corner from three of the city's best used record shops, so unloading a small stack here or there, as cash need commanded, was easily done. Eventually, there were no records left to sell.

The world was knee-deep in the CD thing and I certainly owned my share. Also, home taping was still very much the norm and home tape I did, from the often massive collections of many of my friends. Selling off my vinyl in no way signaled a divorce from my obsessive love for music.

Fast forwarding from the late-90s to the 2010s…

Over the past decade I began to acquire vinyl again, building a collection larger by a fair few hundred items. In 2015, I embarked upon posting a semi-public log of my shifting inventory of vinyl releases, purely to satisfy a mild compulsion of unknown origin. On my computer, I have a document containing all of the pressing, release, label, and condition details that would make this a more meaningful record to collectors. I’ve no patience for transferring all of that data here, however.

While I absolutely do fetishize vinyl records, and there’s little point in denying it, I am bored to tears by those who wax rhapsodic, with dewy-eyed sentimentality, on the format’s magical allure. I have no desire to convert anyone.

At the end of the day, it is the music that matters (and the accompanying hubbub, as the artists I adore most are rarely just about the music, and the hubbub matters). For what it’s worth, I also listen to shit on streaming constantly, because I like and/or love so much; I actually become anxious at the thought of owning it all. I can easily foresee a day when I again have no records, but I can foresee days where all sorts of shit happens. For now, the presence of these things, both on my turntable and shelves, remains a reliable source of comfort and pleasure.

When it comes to the records and/or artists I particularly love it’s enjoyable to be surrounded by, hold, and interact with the related media. It’s not much more complicated than that. In years to come it may prove more enjoyable to use these records to barter for my life, or put them in a big pile and set them ablaze, or even sell them off. Time will tell.

I’ve maintained this list for a number of years now, purely out of habit. I like to occasionally scroll through it mindlessly. Allow me this and please do the same if you’d like.
